Let's face it: Email is Foreign Archivesplayed out.
The once internet king is long past its glory days, supplanted years ago by the likes of Slack, Signal, WhatsApp, and (shudder) Facebook Messenger. But for those of you who for some ungodly reason still communicate primarily via means of cluttered inboxes there is hope: Gmail is about to get a makeover.
And it might be enough to save email. Maybe.
I mean, probablynot, but you never know.
First reported by The Verge and confirmed in a statement to Mashable, Google appears poised to drop some game-changing (?) updates on our complacent email-using selves.
"We’re working on some major updates to Gmail (they’re still in draft phase)," a spokesperson explained to Mashable. "We need a bit more time to compose ourselves, so can’t share anything yet—archive this for now, and we’ll let you know when it’s time to hit send."
OK, so, "major updates" sound promising! What could they be? The Verge managed to get its hands on "an email to G Suite administrators" (which, hey, emails are still good for leaks at least!), which noted we should expect a "fresh, clean look for Gmail on the web.”
Some other new features noted:
"Ability to 'snooze' emails and choose when they reappear in your inbox."
"Smart Reply on the web, just like on mobile."
"Easy access to G Suite apps, such as Google Calendar, from within Gmail."
That same email noted that Google plans to officially unveil the big news in "the coming weeks."
But what will your personal Gmail inbox look like? Well, fresh and clean of course — we already covered that, remember?
As far as the rest of it goes, we may just have to wait until Google feels like flipping the proverbial switch to find out just what kind of taste this major update leaves in our mouths.
Fingers crossed it's sweet enough to save email from forever being the place where messages go to die.
