【Crazy Sex】
It'll take more than a lawsuit to get rid of John Oliver.
HBO has renewed the Brit's critically acclaimed Last Week Tonightfor three more seasons -- which will keep the Emmy-winning late night series on Crazy Sexair through 2020, assuming we all live that long. Each season will consist of 30 episodes.
“We are thrilled to have John Oliver as an integral part of the HBO family and to continue to share his comedic brilliance with the world,” said HBO programming president Casey Bloys. “His extraordinary genius for rich and intelligent commentary is second to none.”
Oliver added, “First: I firmly disagree with everything Casey just said. Second: We’re very grateful to Richard Plepler, Casey and everyone at HBO for letting us continue to do whatever it is we actually do. And finally: We’d also like to thank our staff for all their hard work. We’re incredibly proud of all of you, and rather than tell you that to your face, we’d like to do it in the cold, dispassionate form of a press release.”
Oliver, HBO and owner Time Warner are currently facing a defamation lawsuit from coal company Murray Energy, after Oliver featured its CEO, Bob Murray, in the show's June 18 episode. Oliver even predicted that Murray might come after him for the segment, saying: "And I know you're probably going to sue me over this. But, you know what? I stand by everything I said."
The ACLU has come to Oliver's defense with a tongue-in-cheek amicus brief that begins, "this case is about Plaintiff Robert E. ("Bob") Murray not liking a television program and somehow believing that is a legally actionable offense," and also includes headings such as "Anyone Can Legally Say 'Eat Shit, Bob!'" and "You Can't Sue People for Being Mean to You, Bob" and "You Can't Get a Court Order Telling the Press How to Cover Stories, Bob."
The suit certainly hasn't stifled Oliver's desire to take on public figures -- in the most recent episode, the host dedicated his main segment to Donald Trump's presidential pardon of Joe Arpaio.
The show has already earned six Emmys and a Peabody Award.
Last Week Tonightairs Sundays at 11:30 p.m. on HBO.
