America woke up on Hong Kong ArchivesFriday to find a new hashtag trending on Twitter: #BlackWomenDidThat.

The hashtag highlights black female politicians, activists, entertainers, scientists, authors, athletes and more and serves as a celebration of black womanhood.

The hashtag grew out of a prompt from Anthony J. Williams, the editor-in-chief of the Afrikan Black Coalition, who asked his followers to create a hashtag honoring black women.

From there, the trend took off with thousands of responses from all across Twitter.

The hashtag continues to grow, with nearly 100,000 tweets and counting.

Shortly after #BlackWomenDidThat began to trend, Williams shared a bit of the thinking behind the hashtag, and how it relates to the current political climate.

Williams also called on those following the hashtag to take action in their own, non-digital lives to show support for black women.
