Congratulations to our advisory editor Hilton Als on his Pulitzer Prize for Criticism. In today’s announcement, the committee cited the strength of his work for The New Yorker, where he’s written “bold and original reviews that strove to put stage dramas within a real-world cultural context, particularly the shifting landscape of gender, sexuality, and race.” You can—and must—read those essays here.
But say you have hankering for more Hilton…
You’ve come to the right place. Most recently, Hilton curated the portfolio for our Winter 2016 issue, a selection of Alice Neel’s East Harlem portraits. He also interviewed Elizabeth LeCompte, the director of the Wooster Group, an experimental theater troupe. Those are mere amuse-bouches for the full spread of the Als archive, which we recommend perusing in its entirety, in honor of his well-deserved award:
- His 2016 interview about James Baldwin’s legacy
- His 2013 Art of Fiction interview with Edward P. Jones
- His 2012 Art of Theater interview with Wallace Shawn
- His 2010 culture diary
- His 2006 Art of Nonfiction interview with Joan Didion
All of us at the Review are thrilled to see his talents recognized by the Pulitzer Prize Board.
